Russ, thanks for the details! It helps to know what you were thinking as you came up with this, which is Great, BTW. I started a rough cartoon image of him but I dunno.....it's pretty bad!

LOL, I've heard that line before! Oh, wait... you're talking about art... Laughing

Ok I'll give it a try this weekend. I need to rest up and prepare first (with the bottle of wine I was just given!)

Also don't forget to study the form of other Artists....http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&biw=1024&bih=587&gbv=2&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=tom+cruise+caricature&aq=0&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=Tom+Cruise+caricature&gs_rfai= and use these as a reference. Don't look at it as copying. It's just sizing up the competition and seeing how you can make yours better and basically make it your own (to paraphrase Simon Cowell.)

In actual fact and in lieu of a previous post you made about emulating styles until you are confident with your own, I just have to tell you that to copy from ONE is plagiarism but to copy from MANY is considered to be research.

I've got my pic drawn in my head presently.

That's where my prep work begins. Not sure if anyone else does this?

I will eventually get to some paper ....maybe tomorrow. But definitely it's coming soon folks!

Simon, that's very true, I hadn't thought about the research angle. I do look at other peoples cartoons and notice things like how they represented a hand holding a cell phone or something, then try to create my own version. Guess I've been doing research this whole time!

Leah, everything I do starts as an image in my head. Not that I'm some expert, but I find that if I work through different ideas and details in my head, the actual drawing goes faster and better. I don't flounder around as much with an idea of how I want it to turn out.

Showed my friend my rough sketches of Tom last night. Told her about this game and asked her if it looked like Tom Cruise. She was quiet for awhile, staring at the paper with a perplexed expression.....We both started laughing, so I guess my first attempt was not recognizable LOL!

Well, here's my attempt. I tried several times to draw just from looking at a reference photo and it was terrible. So this time, I took a photo and used it as a template and then tried to emphasize the squinty eyes, big eyebrows, nose, jaw, and wild spiky hair. And skiny neck. I don't really like that, but I was spinning my wheels. This ended up more like a comic book than a charicature. I wanted a more cartoony look, but I guess that might come with practice.

That's bloody good. Is it vector Eileen? *In which case all I can suggest is make his face less long and accentuate the teeth a bit more and I think you may even stand a chance of winning this. (ie: take the jaw bone to the bottom of his ears). A remarkable first effort, well done!
*That should be easy for you.

Yes, it's vector. Easy enough to change things. Thanks for the kind review. I can't help but feel like it was a bit of a cheat though. Not freehand like a real charicature artist would do.

Well how a real charicature (sic) artist is really what's up for debate right here atm. There are no hard and fast rules really. Do wot you do. Looks cool enough to me. Cool
