Just saying hello

Post by Kathy on Tue 10 Aug - 5:22

Just stopping in to say hello, and that I'm still lurking around. I read posts at work when the boss isn't looking, and I've been practicing my drawing in the evenings. Nothing new to share yet (it takes me forever to finish even one panel gags, I'm either a perfectionist or just really slow!) but I'm working on a couple and hope to share soon. They are for my Zazzle shop-funny sayings with a cartoon illustration.

Very Happy

Hi Eileen! I'm exactly the same but I'm trying to figure out a way to make it cost- efficient. Something has to give eventually. But I refuse to draw crap.

Hello hello Smile

I confess that I need to be more perfectionist but when I put in the effort it does pay good results.

Well, sometimes I have to stop picking apart my work and just call it finished. LOL!

Agreed, I myself still have plenty of room for improvement with every toon! But bearing in mind this is 'art' one could say those imperfections are part of the artistic nature of the piece and can only add to it's appeal. Wink

'Tis true. A lot of spontaneity in a gag can be lost by trying to create masterpieces and some of the most successful Cartoonists are not great Artists but they have a style that is loose and can get rough expressions on their characters that can actually pull off a not too funny gag. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/matt/ Plus they can churn them out at the rate of knots. A lot of the humor is in the seemingly naive nature of their drawings and I'm quite envious of this.

Yeah, I love those types, too. Trying not to envy, though, just trying to figure out what's MY style, you know? Maybe that's why it's taking so long to finish something, I'm still experimenting.

I loved LARRY'S cartoons [he produced thousands and thousands over decades, surely one of the most prolific gag cartoonists ever.....
]

For sheer spontanaeity, LARRY was the tops! He never even used a pencil, he just put pen straight to paper, but his stuff was so full of life.

I probably prefer roughing out pencils first----I've often maintained that this is where real creativity lies. Inking is a seperate art, I'm getting better, but I'm still a better penciler.

So much spontanaeity of original penciling is often lost, as Simon indicates.

Larry is good. Is it just me and my crappy connection (?), but I can't see the images in his Gallery.

Hahaha...it may have something to do with the fact that he is is deceased and the site is owned, managed and published by Internet Strategist and Google Consultant, Steve Johnston. Those animations on the front page are pretty cool though.
