Need perspective - regarding cartooning as career!

Post by virtualpsycho on Sun 4 Jul - 17:29

Hello for some reason as I am doodling and assembling cartoons I get this feeling that its all pointless and a recurrent thought runs through my head I will never get anywhere wit it.

Is this normal for everyone starting out or even accommopolished cartoonists?

Thank you.

greetings, virtual;

some days I can think up loads of ideas for cartoons, other days I can't come up with any ideas for toffee. It's a mistake to force ideas into being...the results will loked laboured and 'stiff'.

Just stick to stuff you know and enjoy......if you like football for example, bash out some footie gags......you can add time-travel themes or other exotic tangents into the mix, it's all about freeing up your imagination.

I mean that as i am doing whatever parts of the cartoon I still get this recurring sense in my head saying your going to fail, your going to fail, your going to fail, your going to fail.....

Has anyone ever felt like this and overcome it to become a cartoonist?

All you need is a proper brief from a bona fide Client to get your teeth into instead of drawing for the sake of it (but don't stop whatever you do). Keep your ears and eyes open here and on the sites I've shown you. I don't profess to be a major player in the game, but with a little patience and optimism, the work has slowly started to trickle in. I think if you are that serious in your resolve to become an accomplished Cartoonist then there's no reason why you can't. Just try and be positive about it. It's just the same as if you aspired to be a Bus Driver as far as I'm concerned.

I believe it is normal to experience intense doubt in your cartooning powers sometimes. I experienced a sharp pang of it in the fall/winter of 2011. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola experiences it even now despite being at the top of his game (two movies made from his fan-favorite, creator-owned property, with legions of copy-cats!).

I advise you to just find something that makes you feel confident (like drawing for awe-struck children or something) and ride it out. Then get back to work.

I feel like that every time I pick up a pencil. Every Time. Sometimes it's paralyzing, and I go watch TV or something.

But regardless of whether I succeed or not, time marches on. Might as well be trying to do something I love while time passes. Otherwise, I will certainly fail, if I don't even try for success.

Make sense?
