Quotes sought for cartoon for a website

Post by 9-free on Sun 20 Jun - 16:07

Hello,

I'm interested in receiving quotes for the following editorial cartoon:

  1. The subject is a humorous/insightful take on the high-frequency use of nines in prices and fee fractions (e.g. $4.99, 2.9%), and the trickery/disrespect/cognitive-burden they represent. One possibility would be the depiction of a shopping mall or supermarket, where somewhat nervous shoppers are watched by anthropomorphic 9s, loitering on shelves [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and/or acting like [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] in vignettes all over the panel (e.g. beating up zeros, 8s joining the club, harassing shoppers), inviting extended viewing. I'm open to other takes on the issue, but would like some hint in the quote.

  2. All that's required is an indefinite licence to display the cartoon on one website. If the cartoon is to be worked-on/expanded over time, a licence to display any version is instead required. I don't mind placing a small "Cartoon by X" link underneath.

  3. I anticipate that the cartoon will be placed as either a panel or a banner on the website's homepage. A large and wide banner will be used if there's a lot going on in the cartoon.

In your quote, please either include or link-to a sample of your work, preferably in a style that you consider suitable for the job.

Cartoon quotes can be optionally accompanied by quote for a site logo, probably just a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] 9, or perhaps depicting the cutting of the tail of a nine to make a zero.

I'll be accepting quotes for one month from the date of this posting.

Thank you.

Mark

Ha! I removed a line about quotes having to be a round number of currency units, because it wouldn't change who got hired.

I think whoever can provide a decent mock- up for this could be instantly hired. A month is a very tangeable time frame. Very Happy

Yes, 8s are often used as surrogate 9s. e.g $99.98, $14.88. They serve the purpose of undercutting and breaking away from the monotony of 9s, while still being close to the extra dollar, and still giving the impression of a precise price, which hints at a small margin.

7s and 5s can also have the same intent. Digits 0 to 4 are the least used in prices.

Here's a funny thing that I was thinking could make nice gag cartoon not sure how yet.

When I went to Tunisia (North Africa) 1991, the lcoals when promoting their market wares would shout out

"everything 99p"

and

"Fish & Chips"

Because they'd be told by Britts this is what everything costs and all anyone wants (re Fish & Chips)

What do you think?

Another vision I have is reminiscent of that Brick in the Wall song from eons ago. Where the hammers are all lined up (Pink Floyd?), the nines could all be lining up menacingly, marching along etc.

That would suit the package really with logo about £150. This is a generalization.
(Edit: Maybe more but it looks attractive)

Simon, I opened quotes for a month because I wasn't sure of the forum traffic, and didn't want people who only saw the post some weeks later to miss out.

I'm open to a mock in lieu of work samples, but I don't want to anger the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] gods Shocked .

No don't worry about them here. Would it be at all possible for you to give us the exact dimensions at which the banner will ultimately be in Pixels? The logo doesn't matter cos' that should be scalable in AI format anyway. What is the deepest it can be? The width would obviously not be larger than 1000".

Leah, that would make a great anecdote and illustration for a marketing textbook or presentation, to underscore that the message should always be adjusted to fit the customer.

Yes, that sort of thing, though more Gremlin-cheeky than Stormtrooper-scary. Though an army massing for a sale could be good.

While 9s can only hop, 99s could walk, holding hands like evil twins from Village of the Damned.

Good question.

I think that the ideal aspect ratio would be about 3:1 (range 1.5:1 to 5:1).

If drawn on a computer, it'd be nice for it to be SVG (so it could have jokes and Easter eggs only visible on zoom), otherwise a 300dpi canvas or scan that can be later appropriately sized.

Same for the logo, though I'd like this to be simple enough that it would be recognisable as a clickable webpage stamp.

I'm sure you would be interested in having it animated then? bounce
