Christopher Hart - elite featured member interview!!
www.chrishartbooks.com

BIO
I'm the leading author of How-To-Draw art books, covering a wide variety of topics, from cartoons, to manga, superheroes, wizards, animals and more; as well as the practical arts, such as anatomy and figure drawing. My main publisher is Watson-Guptill, the art imprint of Random House. I'm their best-selling author, with over 3 million copies sold domestically, which have been translated into over 20 languages. My book, "Manga Mania: How to Draw Japanese Comics," was the number one selling book in the country for over a year. I've had 29 books on Bookscan (the publishing industry's weekly rating system that lists the top 50 books in the country according to category. Mine is "Overall Art."

Some other odds and ends: I have a board game, "Cartoon It," which I co-invented with award winning game designer Joyce Johnson, and produced by the Thinkfun company. It features my animal cartoon characters. It's already won four different parents' awards. I also have over a dozen running segments on How-To-Draw for Comcasts' "Activity TV" channel. And I just did 20 How-To-Draw-Manga videos for Howcast, which have been uploaded to You Tube.
And man, could I use a little sleep!

Goals
I want to be the first man to land on the sun. It would be a record that would last for months!
Training
Yup. But like many of you, the self-taught stuff was equally important, if not more so:
I attended the California Institute of the Arts in their Character Animation Program. Then I transferred to New York University's School of Arts, mainly, for the pizza. Graduated with a BA. I took a year of life drawing at the Pair School of Art in Connecticut, and several semester of life drawing at the Silvermine School of Art. And I watched a lot of cartoons growing up. I recommend an excessive amount of TV watching to anyone who wants to be a cartoonist, or for anyone who doesn't want to be a cartoonist. To heck with soccer practice.
Publications
Lots of magazines. But my main thing are my books, which you can see by visiting my website: www.chrishartbooks.com
They're well stocked nationally in Barnes and Nobles, Amazon, art and hobby shops, and a smattering of comic books stores.
Favourite Cartoonists
Geez... I don't really have "favorites" as much as there's art I truly admire. I'm not so focused on the artist but on the manga book, or animated TV show itself..
I really admire Superman and Batman. Any guy who can walk around the city all day in multi-colored tights without eliciting giggles from pedestrians is someone to be respected, and to worry about.
