Who is your favourite Cartoonist?
I will start with Steve Bell - I follow him religiously in the Guardian every day. One I remember recently was of Berlusconi (funnily enough I think Steve doesn't draw him too well) portrayed as a medallion on a Roman standard with the letters WNQR instead of the Roman SPQR. I thought that was brilliant. Was at the time when all the lurid Berlusconi ladies were coming out with their stories.
Unluckily for me I only share initials with him

He's good! Never heard of him actually but I think I've seen his work in the Spectator. I like the Rooney caricature for its brilliant minimalism.

Re: Who is your favourite Cartoonist?
My all time favorite is Sergio Arrogones. He is the master of those micro inserts in MAD MAGAZINE, His work is minimalist, but he could create some of the most amazing graphic illustrations all by hand,He is a true master artist.
Re: Who is your favourite Cartoonist?
Darby Conley, "Get Fuzzy". Jef Mallet, "Frazz". Dave Coverly, "Speedbump"
There's a ton of others, but my refrigerator is covered with "Get Fuzzy" and "Speedbump" strips clipped from the newspaper.
One of the things I love about Frazz and Jef Mallet is that he often breaks out of the typical square panel layout, and his use of color. Plus the humor is often more clever than many strips. OK, that's three things...

I will have to look up these people you mention here. Anyone familiar with the Italian illustrator Tulllio Pericoli? Great caricature portraits of famous people. Here's a good one of Ssmual Beckett (I think) http://www.galleriasantangelo.it/2006/02/24/tullio-pericoli-paesaggi-e-ritratti/
Re: Who is your favourite Cartoonist?
No, but similar to Druillet, master SYFY artist of the 70's. His work was real deep dark edgy, when I was young I loved the art took years to understand his concepts.
I think he was French.

And here's a link to Malta's finest Photoshop artist (in my op)
http://lisa-falzon.blogspot.com/
She is young (28) and she is so good she probably felt the island was too small for her - don't blame her really... Fantastic dreamy work. I had the pleasure to meet Lisa a couple of years back when she had her last show in Malta.
She currently lives in Cork, Ireland

That's a very truly tidy and well put together site. She is good. Gary Lawson/ The Far Side.

It has to be Gerald Scarfe......................

I love the energy in his work.

Up there along with Ralph Steadman - no doubt about that. I think Steadman at his peak was actually better. I consider Steadman a huge influence on me - not sure it rubbed off on what I do however.
Re: Who is your favourite Cartoonist?
Gary Larson is great. Used to see a counselor that had one of his books in the lobby. Actually probabaly got more out of that book than the counseling sessions!
I also enjoy Unger (Herman.) But then again I don't have very sophisticated tastes.
For comic strips I enjoy Zits by Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman (hits pretty close to home.)
When I was a teenager I wanted to be as good as Pat Oliphant (political cartoonist.) I know it sounds weird but as a teenager I always read the political cartoons first, then the comics page.

I can never quiite forget one particular Larson cartoon with a buck toothed idiot looking at the rounded moon out of a window. Caption: Full moon empty head. Priceless!
Re: Who is your favourite Cartoonist?
As much as I love Bill Waterson and Gary Larson, the artist that I would most like to emulate is Tom Bunk from Mad Magazine.
